Madam,
It will be in vain to deny that I have some Regard for this Piece, since I Dedicate it to You. Yet You may bear me Witness, it was intended only to divert a few young Ladies, who have good Sense and Good Humour enough, to laugh not only at their Sex's little unguarded Follies, but at their own. But as it was communicated with the Air of a Secret, it soon found its Way into the World. An imperfect copy having been offer'd to a Bookseller, You had the Good-Nature for my Sake to consent to the Publication of one more correct: This I was forc'd to before I had executed half my Design, for the Machinery was entirely wanting to compleat it.
The Machinery, Madam, is a Term invented by the Criticks, to signify that Part which the Deities, Angels, or Daemons, are made to act in a Poem: For the ancient Poets are in one respect like many modern Ladies; Let an Action be never so trivial in it self, they always make it appear of the utmost Importance. These Machines I determin'd to raise on a very new and odd Foundation, the Rosicrucian Doctrine of Spirits.
I know how disagreeable it is to make use of hard Words before a Lady; but 'tis so much the Concern of a Poet to have his Works understood, and particularly by your Sex, that You must give me leave to explain two or three difficult Terms.
The Rosicrucians are a People I must bring You acquainted with. The best Account I know of them is in a French Book call'd Le Comte de Gabalis, which both in its Title and Size is so like a Novel, that many of the Fair Sex have read it for one by Mistake. According to these Gentlemen, the four Elements are inhabited by Spirits, which they call Sylphs, Gnomes, Nymphs, and Salamanders. The Gnomes, or Daemons of Earth, delight in Mischief; but the Sylphs, whose Habitation is in the Air, are the best-condition'd Creatures imaginable. For they say, any Mortals may enjoy the most intimate Familiarities with these gentle Spirits, upon a Condition very easie to all true Adepts, an inviolate Preservation of Chastity.
As to the following Canto's, all the Passages of them are as Fabulous, as the Vision at the Beginning, or the Transformation at the End; (Except the Loss of your Hair, which I always mention with Reverence.) The Human Persons are as Fictitious as the Airy ones; and the Character of Belinda, as it is now manag'd, resembles You in nothing but in Beauty.
If this Poem had as many graces as there are in Your Person, or in Your Mind, yet I could never hope it should pass thro' the World half so Uncensured as You have done. But let its Fortune be what it will, mine is happy enough, to have given me this Occasion of assuring You that I am, with the truest Esteem,

What dire Offence from am'rous causes spring,
What mighty contests rise from trivial things,
I sing - This verse to CARYLL, Muse! Is due; This, even Belinda may vouchsafe to view:
Slight is the subject, but not so the praise,
If she inspire, and He approve My Lays.

Annotation:-
In this opening lines of the poem, the poet invokes Muse, the goddess of poetry, as well as states the theme of his poem.
The poet is surprised to find that petty matters, and love- affairs, cause fearful quarrels. He invokes the goddess of poetry and says that he is writing the present poem at the request of his friend Caryll. The poem is on a trivial subject, that is the cutting of a lock of hair. But if Belinda inspires him, and his friend likes it and reads it, he would consider himself sufficiently honoured and rewarded.

Annotation:
O Goddess of Poetry, tell me which was the strange cause which compelled a cultured lord attack, i.e., cut the lock of hair of a gentle lady. O Goddess, also tell me, what was the strange and unknown cause which led a gentle lady like Belinda to reject a great lord like Lord Peter. The poet is surprised to find that little men can engage in such bold tasks, and gentle ladies can show such violent anger.

2. Belinda's Dream. (13-26):
Sol through white curtains shot a timorous ray,
And op'd those eyes that must eclipse the day:
Now lap-dogs give themselves the rousing shake,
And sleepless lovers, just at twelve, awake Thrice rung the bell, the slipper knocked the ground,
And the pressed watch returned a silver sound.
[Sol-sun.; Timorous - timid.; Those eyes - eyes of Belinda. ; Lap dogs - small dogs.]
Annotation:
The sun rose that morning and a ray of light entered timidly through the white curtains of Belinda's bedroom.She opened her eyes which were more bright than the day itself. Lapdogs moved to snake off their sleep. Lovers, who had passed a sleepless night, woke up at twelve o clock in the day. Belinda rang a handbell three times to call her maid-servant. When she did not come, Belinda knocked the ground with her slipper. Then she pressed the pendant or knob of her watch to know the time. The watch struck twelve with a silvery, musical sound.

Her guardian sylph prolonged the balmy rest:
Belinda still her downy pillow pressed,
't was he had summoned to her silent bed The morning-dream that hovered o'ver her head;
A youth more glittering than a birth-night beau, Seemed to her ear his winning lips to lay,
(That even in slumber caused her cheek to glow)
And thus in whispers said, or seemed to say.
Annotation:
Belinda continued to press her soft pillow with her head. Her guardian angle - a sylph - prolonged her sweet rest. This sylph (Ariel) called a dream to her silent bed. It was the dream that had hovered over head since morning. In this dream Belinda saw a young man even more splendidly dressed than a young gallant, who dressed himself in his very best for royal birthday celebration. (This young man was Ariel himself in disguise.) this gallant was so attractive that Belinda blushed even her sleep. He seemed to lay his persuasive lips to Belinda's ears, and seemed to speak to her following words.

3. Ariel's Warning. (27-114)
'Fairest of mortals, thou distinguished care
Of thousand bright inhabitants of air!
If e'er one vision touched thy infant thought,
Of all the nurse and all the priest have taught;
Of airy elves by moonlight shadows seen,
The silver token, and the circled green, ..
[Fairest mortal-Belinda. Thou distinguished care of whom the spirit of air taken special care. Vision - imaginary tales. Touched- impressed. Infant thought-thought of Belinda as child. Elves- fairies. Silver token - silver coin left behind by fairies as tokens of their visit. Circled green - circles formed on the green grass by the dancing of the fairies.]
Or virgins visited by angel-powers,
With golden crowns and wreaths of heavenly flowers;
Here and believe! Thy own importance know,
Nor bound thy narrow views to things below.
[Wreath-garlands. Nor bound thy narrow views – do not be narrow minded. Things below - earthly matters.]
Annotation:- (29-36)
In this line the poet is referring to some popular superstitions regarding the fairies. The nurses and the priests were commonly responsible for teaching such superstitions to children. The young gallant of the dream tells Belinda that as a child she must have also listened to many fairy tales. Her nurse must have told her how the fairies visit the earth at night in moonlight and in the shades of trees. They leave behind silver coins as tokens of their earthly visit. Sometimes, they dance on the green grass and form circles with their dancing. Her priest must have told her that virgins are the chosen favourites of God and so His angels often visit them.
They were golden crowns on their heads and garlands of heavenly flowers round their necks. If in her childhood, Belinda was ever impressed by such tales she must listen to the gallant and believe what he tells her. She must understand her own importance - she was most beautiful, so the spirits loved her and watched over her with special care. She must not be narrow- minded and think only of earthly things. She must also think of spirits that live above in the air.

To maids alone and children are revealed:

[Learned pride-people who are pride of their learning. Credit - belief. Doubting wits - wise people who do no believe in fairy tales and dismiss them as mere superstition. Still – always.]
Annotation:-(27-40)
The youth in the dream told Belinda that she was the most beautiful of all human beings, and so she was under the special care of thousand bright spirits who live in the air. He then reminded Belinda of the various fairy tales told to her by her nurse and her priest. The nurse must have told her of fairies who move about in moonlight under the shades of trees. Such fairies leave behind them silver coins as token or signs of their visit. They form circles on the green grass by their dancing. The priest must have told her how virgins are visited by angels with gold crowns on their heads and garlands of divine flowers round their necks.
If ever such visions or imaginary stories, impressed her in her own importance. She must not be narrow-minded like others on earth. There are certain truths which kept secret from the people who are proud of their learning and who laugh at the fairy tales. Such truths are revealed only to maidens and children. It does not matter if the grown-ups doubts such tales; fair maidens like Belinda and innocent children always believe them.

The lower sky- the airy spirit of the lower sky are to be distinguished from the etherial spirits of the upper sky. Though unseen they are not seen by Belinda and other human beings. Ever on the wing- always hovering.]
As now your own, our beings were of old, And once inclosed in woman's beauteous mould;
Thence, by a soft transition, we repair From earthly vehicles to these of air.
[Our beings - our souls. Of old - in the past. Once inclosed – in the 1 past, the spirits were also imprisoned in female bodies. Beauteous mould- the beautiful bodies of women. Thence - from female bodies. Soft transition – easy and smooth transformation brought about by death. Repair - pass/move. Earthly vehicles - bodies.]
These of air-airy forms.
Think not, when woman's transient breath is fled,
That all her vanities at once are dead;
Succeeding vanities she still regards,
And though she plays no more, o'erlooks the cards.
